Oatmeal Is the Cheapest, Most-Reliable Weight-Loss Breakfast

A half cup of dry oats is 150 calories with 4g of fiber and 5g of protein. Cooked with milk and topped with berries and a scoop of protein powder, it lands at 350 calories with 25g of protein and 8g of fiber — the textbook breakfast for sustained energy and zero mid-morning hunger.

The trick is treating oats as a canvas, not a finished dish. Cinnamon and vanilla make basic oats into a dessert. Peanut butter and banana make them into a meal. Cocoa and Greek yogurt make them into a chocolate pudding. The base costs 20 cents per serving — the toppings are where the fun lives.

On Pepper, home cooks return to their favorite oat formulas for a breakfast that can be prepped in a minute and enjoyed every day.

Quick Tips

  1. 1

    Rolled oats > instant

Slower digestion, more fiber, less sugar. Same 3-minute cook time.

  2. 2

    Cook in milk, not water

Free protein bump and creamier texture. Skim or unsweetened almond keeps the calories low.

  3. 3

    Mash a banana in

Natural sweetness, no added sugar. Adds creaminess and a serving of fruit at once.

  4. 4

Stir in protein powder OFF heat

Whey clumps when boiled. Cook the oats, take off heat, stir in protein at 120°F.
