Ingredients

  • 14 oz Firm Tofu
  • 3 Tbsp Cornstarch
  • 1/2 Tbsp Sesame Oil
  • 1 Tbsp Vegetable Oil
  • 1/4 Cup Soy Sauce
  • 1/4 Cup Water
  • 2-3 tsp Honey
  • 1-2 tsp Sriracha
  • 2 Cloves Garlic
  • 1/2 tsp Rice Wine Vinegar

Instructions

  1. 1Place the Tofu between paper towels to squeeze excess water out. I typically do this for 30 minutes by placing my cast iron on top of it.
  2. 2Slice tofu into cubes and and coat in 2 Tbsp of cornstarch
  3. 3In large pan on medium-high heat put sesame and vegetable oil. When oils are heated add the tofu. Let it brown on all sides.
  4. 4While it is cooking make the sauce. Whisk together soy sauce, water, honey, sriracha, minced garlic, rice vinegar, and 1 Tbsp of corn starch.
  5. 5When the tofu is crispy add sauce to the pan. It will start to thicken. Once the tofu is coated remove it from the heat. Leaving it on too long can cause it to burn.
  6. 6Serve with green onions or sesame seeds and some rice. Enjoy!!!

Why Plant-Based Protein Is Easier Than People Think

A cup of cooked lentils delivers 18g of protein. A block of tofu is 40g. A can of chickpeas is 30g. The food itself was never the problem — it's the technique that scared people off.

Press your tofu, season it like you'd season a steak, and crisp it hard. Lentils need salt earlier than you think. Chickpeas roast into the best snack in your kitchen.

On Pepper, home cooks return to their favorite high-protein plant-based dishes time and again, building a trusted rotation of flavorful, satisfying meals that take the guesswork out of plant-based eating.

Quick Tips

  1. 1

Press your tofu like you mean it

Twenty minutes in a tofu press transforms texture from spongy to steaky.

  2. 2

    Cornstarch for crispy

Toss cubed tofu in cornstarch before pan-frying. Restaurant-level crust at home.

  3. 3

    Salt lentils after they soften

Salting too early can keep them firm. Wait until they're nearly tender.

  4. 4

    Roast chickpeas dry

Pat them obsessively dry before the oven. Wet chickpeas steam instead of crisp.
