Why Shrimp Is the Lowest-Calorie Lean Protein Worth Cooking

Shrimp clock about 100 calories per 4-oz portion with 20g of protein — denser than chicken breast on a calorie-to-protein basis. Cooked with citrus, garlic, and chili instead of butter and breading, a full plate of shrimp tacos or a shrimp bowl lands at 300-380 calories.

Skip the alfredo, the heavy cream, the deep fry. Shrimp wants heat, acid, and a little fat — that's it. Lemon, lime, paprika, chipotle, fresh herbs, a teaspoon of olive oil, done.

Home cooks on Pepper consider these low-calorie shrimp formulas essential. That five-minute cook time and 30g of protein per plate is a weeknight superpower the community confidently returns to.

Quick Tips

  1. 1

    Buy frozen, thaw under water

Thaws in 8 minutes under cold tap water. Always fresher than 'fresh' shrimp at the counter.

  2. 2

Two minutes per side is the rule

Shrimp cook in 4 minutes total. The minute they curl into a 'C', pull them off — overcooked shrimp turn rubbery fast.

  3. 3

    Marinate quickly

Citrus marinades only need 15 minutes — longer and the acid starts to 'cook' the shrimp like ceviche.

  4. 4

    One pound feeds three

16-20 count shrimp = 5-6 per portion. Pair with cabbage slaw or cauliflower rice to keep the plate full.
