  • 2 Tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 Small yellow onion; diced
  • 4-6 Garlic cloves; minced
  • 1 lbs. Italian sausage
  • 1/2 lbs. Ground beef
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • 2 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp Onion powder
  • 1/8 tsp Red pepper flakes
  • 1 Tbsp Brown sugar
  • 48 oz. Marinara sauce; 2 jars
  • 8 oz. Ricotta cheese
  • 8 oz. Cream cheese; room temperature
  • 1/3 cup Parmesan cheese; grated
  • 3 cups Mozzarella cheese; shredded; divided
  • 8oz. Sour cream
  • 1/2 cup Parsley; freshly chopped
  • 1/2 tsp. Garlic powder
  • 1 Large egg
  • 1/2 cup Butter; cut into slices and divided

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. 2Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook pasta to al dente according to package instructions. Drain well and return pasta to original pot. Add one jar of marinara sauce and stir to combine. Set aside.
  3. 3In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add in garlic and cook 1 minute, followed by the onions. Continue to cook until the onions become soft (about 5 minutes). Add sausage, ground beef, season with salt and pepper to taste, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, and red pepper flakes to skillet. Stir and cook the meat mixture until no pink remains. Drain well, add 2nd jar of marinara sauce and brown sugar, stir through to combine. Reduce heat to LOW and simmer for 15 minutes to allow the seasonings abd sauce to meld together.
  4. 4Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, cream cheese, Parmesan cheese, sour cream, 1 cup of mozzarella cheese, chopped parsley, and egg; mix until well combined. Set aside.
  5. 5Line the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish with 1/2 of the slices of butter, followed by spreading half a layer of the spaghetti noodles. Next, spread the cheese mixture evenly over the spaghetti noodles layer then spread the remaining spaghetti noodles evenly over top of the cheese mixture layer. Top with the remaining slices of butter. Add the meat sauce on top and spread to an even layer. Lastly, spread the remaining 2 cups of mozzarella cheese evenly over the top.
  6. 6Bake at 350°F in the oven for 40-45 minutes until the top is bubbling and the casserole is heated through. Let rest 10 minutes before serving. Serve and enjoy!

The Pan That Feeds Everybody

A bubbling pan of noodles, sauce and cheese is the easiest way to feed a full table. You build it once, bake it once, and dinner is handled with leftovers for tomorrow.

Cooks on Pepper reach for these on nights with ball practice, company coming, or a freezer pan they made last Sunday and only have to heat through.

Every recipe here is a baked pasta you can make ahead: Cheesy Lasagna, Spinach stuffed shells, Million Dollar Baked Spaghetti Casserole, Baked Ziti, Venison lasagna, white chicken lasagna roll-ups and Stuffed manicotti.

Quick Tips

  1. 1

    Undercook the noodles

Boil pasta 2 minutes shy of package directions so it finishes in the sauce instead of turning mushy.

  2. 2

    Drain the meat well

After browning a pound of ground beef or Italian sausage, pour off the grease so the layers don't go soupy.

  3. 3

    Cover then uncover

Bake covered with foil 30 minutes, then uncover 10 to 15 minutes to brown the cheese on top.

  4. 4

    Let it rest

Give the pan 10 to 15 minutes out of the oven so the slices hold together when you cut them.
