Salmon Is the Easiest Way to Hit Protein and Omega-3s at Once

A 5-oz salmon fillet is 280 calories with 30g of protein and 4g of omega-3s — the same omega-3 dose your doctor charges $40/month for in supplement form. Two salmon dinners a week covers your fatty-acid requirement, and the protein keeps you full enough to make a calorie deficit feel automatic.

Salmon also cooks in 12 minutes, which makes it the lowest-effort high-protein dinner in the seafood aisle. Air-fry it, sear it, bake it on a sheet pan with vegetables — every method works, every method is under 30 minutes start to finish.

On Pepper, home cooks return to their favorite salmon formulas again and again. A weeknight protein that's faster than chicken and better for your heart is always a welcome addition to the regular rotation.

Quick Tips

  1. 1

    Pat dry before searing

Wet salmon steams; dry salmon crisps. Paper towel, 30 seconds, transformative.

  2. 2

    Skin-side down first

Sear skin 4 minutes for restaurant-quality crackling. Flesh side only needs 1-2 minutes.

  3. 3

    Internal temp 125°F

Pull at 125, rest to 130. Past 140 it's chalky — the most common home-cooked salmon mistake.

  4. 4

    Marinate 15 minutes, not overnight

Acid breaks down the protein after 30 minutes and turns it mushy. Quick marinades only.
