A Loaf Of Bread Makes Pizza Night

A loaf of French bread split down the middle gets you pizza without dough, without waiting on it to rise, and without calling for delivery. Sauce, cheese, whatever's in the fridge, and it's in the oven in five minutes.

Cooks on Pepper reach for these on the nights everybody's coming and going at different times, when the kids want to pick their own toppings, or when there's half a loaf on the counter that needs using up.

Every recipe here starts with bread and ends with melted cheese: the classic French bread pizza with mozzarella and jarred sauce, a pepperoni version cut into four pieces, an air fryer baguette that's done fast, and BBQ chicken French bread pizza.

Quick Tips

  1. 1

    Toast the bread first

Bake the cut halves plain at 400°F for 5 minutes before saucing. It keeps the middle from going soggy under the sauce.

  2. 2

    Go easy on sauce

About 1/3 cup per half is plenty. Any more and it runs off the sides and pools on the pan.

  3. 3

    Shred your own cheese

A block of mozzarella grated fresh melts smoother than bagged shreds, which are coated to keep from sticking.

  4. 4

    Cool before slicing

Let it sit 3 to 5 minutes out of the oven so the cheese sets and stays put when you cut it.
