Ingredients

  • 500 grams ground beef
  • 250 grams noodles (spaghetti or lo mein style)
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce (optional but recommended)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated or 1/2 teaspoon ground fresh ginger, grated or ground
  • 1/2 cup beef broth or water
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • to taste salt and black pepper
  • to taste red chili flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. 1Cook the noodles according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  2. 2Heat vegetable oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until fully browned, breaking it apart. Season lightly with salt and black pepper.
  3. 3Add minced garlic and ginger to the beef. Cook for about one minute until fragrant.
  4. 4In a small bowl, mix soy sauce, brown sugar, hoisin sauce, and beef broth. Stir in cornstarch until dissolved.
  5. 5Pour the sauce into the pan with the beef. Stir well and simmer for 3 to 5 minutes until slightly thickened.
  6. 6Add the cooked noodles to the pan and toss until fully coated in the sauce.
  7. 7Sprinkle sliced green onions on top. Add red chili flakes if desired. Serve immediately while hot.

Your First Ten Recipes

Learning to cook doesn't require culinary school — it requires ten reliable recipes you can pull off without stress. This collection is exactly those ten.

Cooks on Pepper share this collection with anyone just starting out because every recipe uses common ingredients, basic techniques, and steps written to be actually followed (not skimmed).

From one-pan dinners to five-ingredient pastas to sheet-pan sausage bakes, these are the recipes that build kitchen confidence one meal at a time.

Quick Tips

  1. 1

    Read the recipe twice

Once for the story, once for the timing — you'll catch the 'meanwhile' step that trips up beginners.

  2. 2

    Prep everything first

Chop, measure, and arrange ingredients before the pan gets hot — mise en place is a game changer.

  3. 3

    Buy a meat thermometer

Chicken at 165°F, steak at 130°F — take the guesswork out of doneness forever.

  4. 4

    Salt as you go

Season each layer (meat, veggies, sauce) instead of at the end — deeper, more even flavor.
