Ingredients

  • 10-12 oz (6-7 cups) Oyster Crackers
  • 3/4 cup Vegetable Canola or Avocado Oil
  • 1 packet (1 oz) Ranch Dressing/Seasoning Mix Packet
  • 1/2 tsp Dried Dill
  • 1/4 tsp Lemon Pepper
  • 1/4 tsp Garlic Powder

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat the oven to 275°F. Position the rack in the middle of the oven.
  2. 2In a large bowl, whisk together all the seasonings and the oil
  3. 3Pour the oyster crackers into the bowl and stir, gently, until all oyster crackers are thoroughly coated (take care not to break up crackers)
  4. 4Spread crackers evenly onto an ungreased, rimmed baking sheet
  5. 5Bake, uncovered, for 15-20 mins.
  6. 6When they come out of the oven, stir crackers. Let cool completely before enjoying or storing.
  7. 7NOTE: If using the Hidden Valley 'RESTAURANT-STYLE' Dressing packet, only use one packet (even though it is only 0.4 oz).

Why Oysters Are Worth Learning to Love

Oysters eaten raw on the half shell with a mignonette or squeeze of lemon are one of the most purely pleasurable eating experiences available. But they're also deeply versatile when cooked — grilled with garlic butter, baked Rockefeller-style, or folded into creamy chowder.

For those new to oysters, starting cooked is a reasonable approach. Grilled oysters develop a subtle smokiness and the brine concentrates into something extraordinary. The raw experience, once embraced, is unlike anything else.

Home cooks on Pepper expertly save and share their favorite oyster recipes, from simple mignonette preparations to showstopping grilled and baked dishes for entertaining guests.

Quick Tips

  1. 1

    Buy fresh, smell first

Fresh oysters should smell like the ocean — clean and briny. Avoid any with a strong fishy or ammonia smell, and make sure shells are tightly closed or snap shut when tapped.

  2. 2

    Shuck safely and easily

Wrap the oyster in a thick towel, hinge-side out, and use an oyster knife — not a regular knife. Insert at the hinge, twist, then slide along the top shell to cut the muscle.

  3. 3

    Grill flat side up

When grilling oysters in the shell, place them cup-side down over high heat. They'll pop open on their own in 5–8 minutes and stay filled with their own juices and any butter you add.

  4. 4

    Match sauce to style

Raw oysters do best with light mignonette or just lemon. Save heavier toppings — breadcrumbs, cheese, hot sauce — for baked or grilled preparations where bold flavors won't overwhelm the oyster.
