The Drinks That Make December Feel Like December

A good holiday drink does a lot of work for very little effort. You stir something warm or something creamy, hand it over, and the room settles down.

Cooks on Pepper reach for this collection when family comes in the door, when the cookies are cooling, or when it's cold and quiet and one mug is plenty.

Every recipe here is a real holiday glass: Eggnog Espresso Martini, Homemade Eggnog, Coquito, White Christmas Punch, Ultimate Mulled Wine, and two hot toddies — one with Earl Grey, one with apple cider and ginger.

Quick Tips

  1. 1

    Temper the egg yolks

For homemade eggnog, whisk a cup of the hot cream into the yolks a little at a time before adding it all back to the pot. That keeps it smooth instead of scrambled.

  2. 2

    Keep mulled wine low

Hold the wine and apple cider at a bare simmer for 20 to 30 minutes. A hard boil cooks off the alcohol and turns the spices bitter.

  3. 3

    Shake the martini hard

Shake vodka, eggnog, and Kahlua with ice for a full 15 seconds. That's what gives you the cold foam on top.

  4. 4

    Chill punch overnight

Mix the pineapple juice, white cranberry juice, and coconut milk a day ahead and refrigerate 8 hours so you skip the ice and the watered-down taste.
