Watermelon Lemonadedrink

Watermelon Lemonade

We had a ton of leftover watermelon after the 4th of July and I needed to do something with it. This drink is cool and refreshing, perfect for a hot summer day!

  • (From 3 lemons) Lemon juice
  • 2 cups Water
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. 1Blend watermelon (I have a 5 cup blender, so I had to split this into two batches).
  2. 2Pour through a mesh strainer over a pitcher.
  3. 3Juice 3 lemons, pour that through the strainer as well. Also, don’t forget to add any watermelon juice at the bottom of the bowl your melon was in.

A Blender Full of Cold Watermelon

A watermelon sitting on the counter is half a dozen drinks waiting to happen. All it takes is a blender, a little ice, and something sour to wake it up.

Cooks on Pepper reach for these in July and August, when it's too hot to think about the stove and there's still half a melon in the fridge from the weekend.

Every recipe here starts with watermelon and goes somewhere different: Watermelon Lemonade with the juice of three lemons, Watermelon Agua Fresca with fresh mint, a Strawberry Watermelon Smoothie, a slushie made with lemonade and ice, and a pineapple watermelon smoothie.

Quick Tips

  1. 1

    Freeze the melon cubes

Cut watermelon into 1-inch cubes and freeze them 4 hours ahead. Blended frozen, you get a thick slushie without watering it down with ice.

  2. 2

    Add acid at the end

A tablespoon of fresh lime or lemon juice per 4 cups of blended melon keeps it from tasting flat and sweet.

  3. 3

    Strain for clear juice

Pour blended watermelon through a fine mesh strainer and press with the back of a spoon for about 1 minute if you want smooth juice instead of pulp.

  4. 4

    Chill the melon first

Refrigerate the whole watermelon at least 6 hours before cutting. Cold fruit means you need less ice and the drink stays bright.
