Open in Pepper →A pound of ground beef, an onion, and a can of tomato sauce turn into supper in about 25 minutes. That's why sloppy joes stay in the rotation — cheap, fast, and everybody eats them.
Cooks on Pepper reach for this collection on the nights nobody planned anything, when the kids are hungry at 5:30 and there's hamburger meat thawing on the counter.
Every recipe here starts with that skillet and takes it somewhere: Easy Sloppy Joe Grilled Cheese, Cajun Chicken Sloppy Joes, Sloppy Joe Egg Rolls, Sloppy Joe Biscuit Bake, Sloppy Joe Potato Skillet, French Onion Beef Sloppy Joes, and Mississippi Cheeseburger Sloppy Joes.
Drain the fat well
After browning a pound of beef, tip the skillet and spoon off the grease. Leftover fat is what makes the sauce slide off the bun.
Let the sauce thicken
Simmer uncovered 8 to 10 minutes so the ketchup and tomato sauce cling to the meat instead of pooling.
Toast the buns
Butter the cut sides and toast 2 to 3 minutes in a dry skillet so the bottom bun holds up.
Chop the onion small
Dice onion and green pepper to about 1/4 inch so they soften into the meat in 5 minutes and nobody picks them out.
