Open in Pepper →A good onion ring is mostly about the coating staying put. Get the flour, egg, and crumbs on in the right order and you end up with rings that crunch instead of sliding off in one sad sleeve.
Cooks on Pepper reach for this collection on burger night, when the game is on, or when there's one big sweet onion sitting on the counter and everybody's hungry an hour before dinner.
Every recipe here is a real batch someone made: Air Fryer Onion Rings with paprika in the flour, Cheesy fried onion rings, Mozzarella Stick Onion Rings, Crispy Onion Rings, Baked Onion Rings with seasoned breadcrumbs, Crispiest Onion Rings with red chili powder, and Bacon-Wrapped Onion Rings.
Slice rings a half inch
Cut onions into 1/2-inch rounds so the onion softens by the time the coating browns. Thinner rings turn limp and thicker ones stay raw in the middle.
Set up three bowls
Flour, beaten egg, then crumbs — and keep one hand for dry and one for wet. Otherwise you end up with breaded fingers and bald rings.
Keep the oil at 365
Fry at about 365°F and cook 6 to 8 rings at a time. Crowding the pot drops the temperature and the coating soaks up grease.
Spray before air frying
Mist coated rings with oil on both sides, then cook at 400°F for 8 to 10 minutes, flipping halfway, so the breading actually browns.
