A Cold Glass Worth Stirring Up

Limeade is the drink you make when the kitchen is hot and nobody wants to wait. A few limes, some sugar or a can of lemon-lime soda, and a glass packed with ice, and you have something better than anything from a drive-thru.

Cooks on Pepper reach for these on long summer afternoons, for birthday parties and cookouts, and for those nights when supper is simple and the kids want something special to drink with it.

Every recipe here is quick and made with what you have: two takes on Sonic cherry limeade with maraschino cherries and crushed ice, a watermelon limeade, and a strawberry limeade with lemon and lime juice.

Quick Tips

  1. 1

    Roll limes before juicing

Press and roll each lime on the counter for about 10 seconds before cutting. You will get noticeably more juice out of every one.

  2. 2

    Make a simple syrup

Heat 1 cup sugar with 1 cup water until it clears, about 3 minutes, then cool. It blends in instead of settling at the bottom of the glass.

  3. 3

    Use crushed ice

Fill the glass two-thirds with crushed ice before pouring. It chills fast and gives you that drive-in texture.

  4. 4

    Add the cherry juice

Spoon in 1 to 2 tablespoons of the maraschino syrup from the jar along with the cherries for color and sweetness.
