Why Berries Are the Smoothie Base Worth Standardizing

Berries are the lowest-sugar fruit that still blends into something that tastes like dessert — a rare cheat code.

Cooks on Pepper freeze bagged mixed berries and treat them as the default smoothie base, then swap protein, yogurt, or nut butter on top.

The best berry smoothie is a two-ingredient one that gets a scoop of protein — everything else is optimization.

Quick Tips

  1. 1

    Freeze the banana

A frozen banana is the smoothie thickener you already own.

  2. 2

    Bag mixed berries

One bag of frozen mixed berries covers a week of breakfasts — buy the big one.

  3. 3

    Greek yogurt over milk

Higher protein, thicker texture, still blends smooth.

  4. 4

A splash of lemon lifts everything

Half a teaspoon of lemon juice makes the berry taste more like the berry.
